About the 929 area code

929 is a New York City overlay, not a separate borough. It entered service in 2011 so the same five-borough pool as 917 and 347 could keep adding phones after 718 and 347 ran hot. A 929 caller might be in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or Manhattan — or nowhere near New York. If you have been treating 212 as “real New York” and 929 as “suspicious,” that heuristic is out of date. Newer wireless lines and many new businesses now show 929 even when they sit next to an older 917 customer.

Because 929 is citywide-in-practice, it is one of the common “I might need to pick this up” prefixes for people who live in the boroughs. Landlords, restaurants, clinics, school systems, and city contractors all use it. If you interviewed in Queens, used a rideshare, or gave your number to a borough hospital, a 929 return call can be real. The same ubiquity makes 929 a default spoof for fake landlords, ticket brokers, and “warehouse job” texts that used to wear 917.

Do not confuse 929 with 917 (the overlay people still hear as “a New York cell”) or with 347 (the 718-era overlay people still hear as outer-borough). Seeing 929 does not tell you the borough, and it does not tell you the caller is on a subway platform. It tells you the number is from the newer NYC overlay pool — or that someone copied that look. People also keep 929 numbers after they move to Jersey or the Island.

City volume means robocalls. New Yorkers and people who only visited once both report 929 spam. The productive habit is the same as on the 917 and 347 pages: do not call back a number that only rang once and left no detail; do not pay anyone who refuses to send a written bill to a verifiable address; do look up the line if you need a name. A listing that only exists on a PDF is not more real because the callback is 929.

WHODIS will identify a 929 number when our sources have it, for $1 (Single Solve) or one credit from Pack20 ($10). If we cannot solve it, you pay $0. No subscription — a better fit than a monthly people-search bill for one unexplained New York ring. If you also have a 917 or 347 on the same thread, look those up too; they are related overlays, not proof they are the same desk.

Spoofing disclaimer: Caller ID can be forged. A 929 prefix does not prove the caller is in New York, NY, or that they are who they claim. WHODIS reports what data sources return; it cannot certify a caller’s physical location.

Pricing you can see before you pay

Single Solve is $1 when we identify the number. Pack20 is $10 for 20 credits. If we cannot solve it, you pay $0. WHODIS does not sell subscriptions and does not auto-renew.

FAQ

Is 929 only for one borough?

No. 929 is part of the wider NYC number pool, alongside 917 and 347. It is newer inventory, not a foreign or VoIP-only prefix.

Does a 929 call mean the person is in New York City?

Not necessarily. People keep 929 numbers after they move, and spoofers display 929 because it looks like New York. Treat it as a clue, then look it up.

How much is a 929 lookup on WHODIS?

$1 if we identify the caller, $10 for Pack20, $0 if unsolved. No subscription.
